NATION IN BRIEF : NEW HAMPSHIRE : Dartmouth Plans S. Africa Divestment

Dartmouth College will sell off $11.5-million worth of investments in companies doing business in South Africa by the end of the year. The Board of Trustees of the Ivy League school in Hanover, N. H., said it will also refrain from such investments in the future. Dartmouth President James Freedman read the announcement at a faculty meeting, and 250 to 300 students who were present cheered. Dartmouth has been a hot spot in the debate in this country over South Africa’s apartheid policies. The board said it made the decision to divest after discussing the adverse impact of “these nominal investments.”
