Day-Laborer Site Opened
Congratulations are due to Councilwoman Flores and her staff, as well as to Nancy Cervantes (coordinator of the city program), for their dedication and hard work in creating Los Angeles’ first city-sponsored day-laborer hiring site.
The reactions of both day laborers and business owners in Harbor City clearly indicate that the new program is off to a positive start. Its de facto catch-phrase (“a local solution to a local problem”) aptly describes what people willing to work together can accomplish.
Times reporter Hector Tobar should also be commended for his sensitive reporting on the day-labor issue.
His stories have consistently sought to inform, not inflame, readers on this much-contested subject, an approach, which, in the word trade, is most refreshing to encounter.
