P.M. BRIEFING : 3,700 Strike Canadian Jet Plant

TORONTO — More than 3,700 workers went on strike today at McDonnell Douglas of Canada Ltd. despite progress in negotiations, a union leader said.
Bob White, president of the Canadian Auto Workers, said he’s optimistic a settlement will be reached because “there’s been a lot of progress in the last 12 hours.” But White added, “The strike is on.”
The Canadian plant, which produces wings for two commercial jets and parts for a fighter jet, is currently ahead of schedule. Officials said a strike would have to last several weeks before affecting production in the United States.
