Van Nuys 17, Birmingham 0--Van Nuys (3-4, 3-2) turned good field position and timely turnovers into a shutout at Birmingham.
Quarterback Roy Vasich scored the first touchdown on a six-yard run in the first quarter, four plays after a shanked Birmingham punt traveled only to the Braves’ 27-yard line.
Midway through the second period, Vasich connected with wide receiver Euneyt Karacuha on a 16-yard touchdown for a 14-0 halftime lead. The score was made possible when cornerback Aaron Gadasy blocked a Jake Brescher punt and fell on the ball at the 16.
Vasich completed two of eight passes for 34 yards, and rushed for 22 yards in seven carries. Karacuha kicked both PATs and added a 27-yard field goal.
Danny Larson completed 14 of 32 passes for 130 yards with two interceptions for Birmingham (4-3, 2-3). Brescher caught three passes for 23 yards.
