7.1 Quake Hits Off Japan; Tidal Wave Warning Issued

TOKYO — A major earthquake with a magnitude of over 7.0 was recorded off the coast of Japan’s main Honshu island today, prompting a tidal wave warning for the island’s entire northern coast, officials said.
There was no immediate information on casualties or damage.
U.S. Geological Survey earthquake monitors in Golden, Colo., measured the earthquake at 7.3 while Japanese geologists put the temblor at 7.1.
The USGS said an aftershock measuring 5.8 on the scale was recorded 10 minutes after the main quake.
