NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : Winter Chill Brings Record Readings

Cold air that blanketed much of the eastern half of the nation brought record low temperatures to Florida. In Tallahassee, the mercury dipped to a record low of 34 degrees. Melbourne had a record low of 49, and Miami tied a record with 59. Temperatures dipped below freezing in the Great Lakes and the northern Ohio Valley. Ft. Wayne, Ind., reported a record low of 27. Temperatures were in the 40s in northern New England, where the fall foliage season is just past its peak.
