Mark Allen took 19 minutes 25 seconds off Dave Scott’s record in winning the Ironman Triathlon World Championship with a dramatic finish late Saturday at Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Allen, 27, and Scott, 35, finished near each other in the 2.4-mile swim, were close throughout the 112-mile bicycle ride, and ran shoulder-to-shoulder through most of the 26.2-mile run.
Allen finally pulled away at the end of the marathon to win in 8 hours 9 minutes 14 seconds. Scott was second in 8:10:12. Greg Welch of Australia was third in 8:32:15.
Women’s winner Paula Newby-Fraser of Zimbabwe took five seconds off her own record with a 9:00:56 finish. She also was the 1986 and 1988 winner.
