IN BRIEF : PANAMA : Cabinet Minister Quits After 6 Weeks

Olmedo Miranda, Panama’s government and justice minister, resigned after only six weeks in office. He will be replaced by Renato Pereira, a military law expert and adviser to strongman Manuel A. Noriega, officials said. Miranda cited health and personal reasons in his resignation, according to a statement issued by the office of provisional President Francisco Rodriguez. The ministry will be responsible for enforcing so-called war laws that Noriega imposed after a failed coup attempt Oct. 3.
