A 26-year-old man told a court in Johannesburg, South Africa, that he killed the father of runner Zola Budd because “he tried to assault me sexually.”
Chris Barnard also had told Bloemfontein Magistrates Court he shot Frank Budd, 56, after Budd described Barnard’s girlfriend in derogatory terms.
Zola Budd, who took British nationality before the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics to avoid the international anti-apartheid sports boycott against her homeland, told newspapers after the killing that her father’s homosexuality was a contributing factor to the breakup of her parents’ marriage.
