LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II has appointed former Canadian Justice Minister Ramon John Hnatyshyn as the new governor general of Canada, her spokesman said today.
Hnatyshyn, 55, will take up the post in January. He will succeed Jeanne Sauve, who has been the queen’s representative since 1984.
The queen made the appointment on the recommendation of Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, the spokesman said.
