Norwalk : State Chips In $1 Million to Help Build Sports Center

Norwalk officials learned earlier this week that the city will receive $1 million from the state to help build a $3.3-million sports center at Norwalk Park, City Manager Richard R. Powers said.
State Sen. Cecil N. Green (D-Norwalk) and Assemblyman Bob Epple (D-Norwalk) backed legislation that helped the city secure the funding, Powers said.
The City Council on Tuesday chose the Huntington Beach firm of Anthony & Langford Architects to design the 30,000-square-foot sports center.
In addition to the $1 million, Norwalk is using $1.8 million in city redevelopment and building funds and about $500,000 in state bond money to cover the rest of the construction costs, Powers said.
The sports center will contain a gymnasium, boxing and weight training facilities, racquetball courts and rooms for aerobics, dance and other activities.
The sports center is expected to be completed in June, 1991, Powers said.
