Digital Equipment Corp., Maynard, Mass., has announced the resignation of John J. Shields, 51, as an officer and as senior vice president-sales, services, marketing and international. Digital has fallen short of its sales goals in recent quarters. Shields “has made a personal decision to leave the company to pursue other interests,” the company said. In the quarter that ended July 1, Digital, the world’s second-largest computer company, reported a 22% drop in earnings from the year before and only a 4.7% increase in revenue, the first period of only single-digit growth since 1985. Shields, who joined the company in 1961 as a field service engineer, took the top sales post in 1986.
