NATION : River Traffic Resumes After Spill

NEW YORK — Maritime traffic resumed on the East River today, and bridges were reopened after removal of a tank barge that ran aground and spilled 75,600 gallons of gasoline, the Coast Guard said.
The barge, carrying a cargo of 96,000 barrels or about 4.03 million gallons of gasoline, ran aground Wednesday night just north of the Triborough Bridge, said Petty Officer Jeff Crawley. Most of the spilled gasoline was expected to evaporate.
The Triborough Bridge and a railroad bridge that had been closed to avoid igniting fumes were reopened 6 1/2 hours after the Morania 440 struck bottom about 150 to 200 feet offshore in a rocky channel.
