Freshman quarterback Bret Johnson completed seven of nine passes for 83 yards and a touchdown Thursday at the Rose Bowl in UCLA’s final scrimmage before its opener against Tennessee Sept. 9 in Pasadena.
Johnson also led the offense to a pair of touchdowns. One was scored on a five-yard pass to tight end Corwin Anthony and the other came on a four-yard run by tailback Shawn Wills.
Meanwhile, UCLA’s other would-be starting quarterback, sophomore Jim Bonds, completed only two of seven passes for 15 yards and had three passes intercepted.
One of the interceptions was returned five yards for a touchdown by linebacker James Malone.
Coach Terry Donahue said he would name a starting quarterback next week.
