A Bay Area firm that manufactures and tests scientific instruments used to detect and analyze hazardous substances agreed to pay $725,000 to settle a toxic waste suit filed by the state. Without admitting any wrongdoing, Varian Associates Inc. of Walnut Creek promised to correct alleged violations found at the firm’s instrument division plant. A suit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, charged the company with mixing and storing solvent and acid materials that could react, if mixed. Deputy Atty. Gen. Ken Alex said there were no documented threats to public safety by the alleged violations.
