MIAMI — A former Cuban diplomat and his 9-year-old son were found dead here in what police suspect is a murder-suicide, a police spokesman said today.
Rafael Delgado, 51, and his son Carlos died Sunday night from gunshot wounds “consistent with a murder-suicide,” police spokesman Bill Kinnebrew said.
He said the two were found dead in Delgado’s car after witnesses saw it crash on a Miami street.
Delgado’s estranged wife, Flora, told the Miami Herald that her husband had suffered from depression for several years.
Delgado fought against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista and joined the government of Fidel Castro after the 1959 revolution. He served as a diplomat in Europe for Castro, but in 1980 he broke with the regime, getting asylum in Portugal. He came to the U.S. in 1988.
