Afghan forces pushed back guerrilla fighters and took new territory near a strategic eastern city during fighting that killed 62 rebels, according to the Foreign Ministry. A spokesman said that the fighting in Nangarhar province in the last 24 hours also left six government soldiers dead and 93 rebels and 12 government troops wounded. There was no independent confirmation of the report. The province’s capital is Jalalabad, an eastern city that the guerrillas have twice failed to capture in offensives since Soviet soldiers withdrew in February. Meanwhile, after nearly daily rocket barrages for a month, the capital of Kabul was quiet as suspected rebel sympathizers were rounded up.
