THE SIDELINES : Romanian Woman Runs Record Mile

NICE, France — Paula Ivan of Romania set a world record today in the women’s mile with a time of 4:15.62 at the Nikaia IAAF Mobil Grand Prix Grand Prix track and field meet.
Ivan, the Olympic 1,500-meter champion, bettered the mark of 4:16.71 set by American Mary Slaney in August, 1985, in Zurich.
Ivan ran alone the final two laps. Her splits for the quarter miles were 63 seconds, 2:01.1 and 3:12.6.
