The National League will announce a timetable for expansion within three months after the owners reach agreement with the players’ union on a new contract, Commissioner Bart Giamatti said.
Giamatti gave no specifics on where or when the NL will add two more teams, other than to say that “the early ‘90s” might be a good target date.
“If we have a new agreement on Jan. 1, then by April 1 we will announce the timetable, dates and so forth,” Giamatti said.
Earlier in the meetings, NL President Bill White announced that John McMullen of the Houston Astros, Fred Wilpon of the New York Mets and Doug Danforth of the Pittsburgh Pirates have been named to a new committee on expansion.
Giamatti said he is sure there are at least two cities qualified for expansion teams. Asked to name them, Giamatti said, “City No. 1 and city No. 2.”
