Florida Gov. Bob Martinez announced that a special election to fill the House seat left vacant by the death of Rep. Claude Pepper will be Aug. 29. The 88-year-old Democratic congressman was buried Monday. Some leaders of the Republican Party, riding a wave of GOP momentum in the state, were focusing upon state Sen. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Miami as their leading candidate for the 18th congressional district seat. Carlos Perez, a Cuban-born millionaire banana importer, also said he will run as a Republican. Democrats, with a longer list of interested candidates, had no one publicly committed.
