Section Playoff Roundup : Hoover’s Lam in Two Finals Today in Badminton Playoffs

Bin Lam of Hoover advanced to the today’s finals in two events at the San Diego Section individual badminton playoffs with victories Wednesday at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.
The top-seeded girls in the singles bracket also advanced to the final.
Lam, seeded No. 1 in singles, reached the final with a 15-4, 15-3 victory over No. 7 Tom Sithiphong of Morse.
Lam and Phoung Hua, No. 1 in mixed doubles, will play in the final against the winner of the semifinal match between T.J. Lanuzo-Steven Hashimoto (Serra) and Hoa Dam-Lan Hua (Hoover), which will be played today at 1 p.m. The finals will start at 2 p.m.
In singles, Lam will play sixth-seeded Mang Insixiengmay of Patrick Henry, who rallied to defeat unseeded Tony Ly of Mira Mesa, 10-15, 15-11, 15-7.
Nhu Truong of Serra, top seeded in girls’ singles, defeated No. 4 Sira Southida of Morse, 11-2, 11-8, and No. 2 Hana Ohkawa of La Jolla defeated third-seeded Linh Truong of Hoover, 7-11, 11-3, 3-0, to reach the finals.
Insixiengmay and Amp Khounnorag, seeded No. 5, upset third-seeded Andy Chi and Hoa Dam of Hoover, 15-3, 8-15, 5-4 to reach the boys’ doubles final against fourth-seeded Randy Strauss and Tim Yu of La Jolla.
The top-seeded teams also advanced in girls’ doubles. No. 1 Lanuzo and Nhu Truong of Serra will meet No. 2 Lingh Truong and Phong Hua of Hoover.
Section Tennis
Top-seeded Torrey Pines and second-seeded Mt. Carmel will meet in a rematch of last year’s San Diego Section 3-A boys’ championships, and La Jolla will try for its third consecutive 2-A title against St. Augustine.
La Jolla, which won 15 consecutive section titles from 1970-1984, will face St. Augustine today at 1 p.m., and Torrey Pines will meet Mt. Carmel at 3. Both matches are at Morley Field in Balboa Park.
La Jolla shut out the University of San Diego High School, 11-0, Wednesday and St. Augustine defeated Valhalla, 6 1/2-4 1/2, to advance. St. Augustine is making its third championship appearance in the past four years
Torrey Pines advanced with an 8 1/2-2 1/2 victory over Mira Mesa, and Mt. Carmel defeated third-seeded Poway, 7 1/4-3 3/4.
