The Los Angeles City Council approved a $2.19 monthly increase in sewer service fees Tuesday to help offset the cost of upgrading the city’s aging sewer system.
By an 11-0 vote, the council raised the average monthly fee 27%, from $8.24 to $10.43, effective July 1. The raise affects about 640,000 sewer customers.
The council also approved an increase in the one-time sewer hookup charge for all new projects, hiking the fee for new homes from $1,728 to $2,003.
The rate hikes, along with a later bond sale, are part of a plan to finance $3.4 billion in improvements to the city’s sewer system.
