Two pedestrians were killed Wednesday when they were struck by the driver of a pickup truck who lost control while exiting Interstate 5 onto Pershing Drive, authorities said.
Dead at the scene were James Lawton Cook Jr., 36, of San Diego, and Albert Nolan Badon, 41, of Santa Ana, a deputy coroner said.
Both men were walking along Pershing Drive just after 1:30 a.m. when the truck’s driver, Melvin C. Jones, left the northbound I-5 off-ramp onto eastbound Pershing, swerved and hit them, authorities said.
Jones’ truck then crossed the center divider and westbound lanes of Pershing Drive before hitting an embankment, police said.
Jones, 37, was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police said the district attorney’s office is reviewing the case.
