LINCOLN, Neb. — They thought they were getting free sneakers, but 69 criminal suspects got snookered instead when they showed up at a phony shoe store “for people on the run” and were arrested on outstanding warrants.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, masquerading as an athletic footwear business, mailed 500 letters to people with outstanding arrest warrants, offering a free pair of athletic shoes just for filling out a survey.
The suspects were invited to show up Friday and Saturday at the new Grabar Athletic Footwear store. The name was a takeoff on Gray Bar Hotel, a slang term for jail.
