In his review on John Fante, Tom Clark did not mention a key event in the rediscovery of that wonderful writer’s work.

In 1975, Fante’s “Brotherhood of the Grape” was serialized in a magazine called City of San Francisco, which was owned at the time by Francis Ford Coppola. An editorial note explained that Coppola would soon be making a film based on it.

Those of us who liked what we read in City of San Francisco scurried to the nearest university library to find copies of Fante’s early writings. Fortunately, Black Sparrow Press, through the good offices of Charles Bukowski, has made access to his books much easier.
