Remembering Mexico City’s devastating 1985 earthquake, thousands of government employees have refused to return to their offices in buildings damaged by this week’s tremor, press reports in the capital said. The 1985 earthquake killed 10,000 people and knocked down hundreds of buildings. On Tuesday there was more fear than real damage, when the magnitude 6.8 quake killed two people and cracked many buildings. The government workers, unwilling to accept assurances that the buildings are safe, blocked streets and demanded that authorities completely refurbish old office buildings that were remodeled after the 1985 tremor.
