P.M. BRIEFING : Reuters Taps Post Publisher, Judge

LONDON — Katharine Graham, publisher of the Washington Post, and a senior British High Court judge, Sir Nicolas Browne-Wilkinson, were named today as trustees of Reuters.
The 14 trustees’ function is to safeguard Reuters’ independence and integrity, said the chairman of the Reuters Founders Share Co., Lord McGregor of Durris.
Graham, 71, took over the Washington Post media empire in 1963 and put her own stamp on the powerful newspaper that exposed the Watergate scandal. Browne-Wilkinson, 59, Britain’s vice chancellor, lifted a court order in 1987 that banned three newspapers from publishing extracts from “Spycatcher,” the memoirs of retired counterintelligence agent Peter Wright.
The Reuters Founders Share Co. controls a “golden share” in Reuters Holdings PLC that can overrule other shareholders in the event of a takeover threat.
