Culver City : Bus Fare Increase OKd

The City Council approved a resolution Monday that would raise discounted fares on city bus lines, effective July 1.

A public hearing, which is required before the proposed changes can take effect, was set for June 7 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

The fare changes, part of the 1990-1992 Short Range Transit Plan and Transportation Improvement Program approved by the council, would raise the cost of bus tickets from 15 cents to 25 cents for the elderly and the disabled; from 25 to 35 cents for students through high school, and from 35 to 50 cents for college students. In addition, interagency transfers would increase from 10 cents to 25 cents. The base fare would remain 50 cents.

The increases were recommended to make the city bus lines’ discounted fares comparable to those of other municipal transit systems and to ensure that 38% of its operating costs come from fares and local funds next year, as required by the Los Angeles Transportation Commission.

The plans approved by the council would also provide for more frequent service on some lines. The changes would take effect Sept. 11.
