IN BRIEF : Griffeys Score a Father-Son Record

TEMPE, Ariz. — Rookie Ken Griffey Jr., 19-year-old son of veteran major leaguer Ken Griffey Sr., will be the Seattle Mariners’ starting center fielder this season, Manager Jim Lefebvre said.
Griffey and his father, back with the Cincinnati Reds, will become the first father-son combination to play in the major leagues at the same time, the Mariners said.
The younger Griffey, the nation’s No. 1 draft choice in June, 1987, made the jump from Class AA to the major leagues with a sensational spring. He has hit .397, with two home runs and 19 RBI.
“When I came to camp, I was hoping to do well,” Griffey said. “But I didn’t expect to do this well.”
