Point Loma Nazarene Breezes to 10-3 Victory

Point Loma Nazarene College scored seven runs in the fourth inning, then coasted to a 10-3 victory over George Fox College (11-7) in a nonconference game at Point Loma. Craig Gastineau hit a two-run homer to get things started in the fourth for the Crusaders (11-11). Tom Martin (2-1) pitched six innings and got the victory.
SWIMMING
Three San Diego swimmers placed in the top 10 at the United States Swimming national championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
For Swim San Diego, Mike Picotte placed fourth in the men’s 200 freestyle in 1:38.02. Heartland Swim Assn.’s Matt Buckley was fourth in the men’s 1,000 freestyle in 9:08.94 and Michelle Butcher placed seventh in the women’s 1,650 freestyle in 16:24.94.
MEN’S TENNIS
The University of San Diego defeated San Jose State, 5-1, in a nonconference match in San Jose. Dave Stewart, Chris Toomey, Dan Mattera, J.R. Edwards and Rick Matheson won in singles for the No. 21-ranked Toreros (18-3).
San Diego State split its singles matches but lost two of three doubles matches and lost to Weber State, 5-4, in the UC Irvine tournament. For SDSU (5-12), Joe McDonough, Woody Yocam and Bill Kearsley won in singles. The Yocam-Kearsley team won in doubles. Weber State is 9-5.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
San Diego State lost just one set to South Carolina (3-11) and defeated the Gamecocks, 5-0, in a nonconference match in Columbia, S.C. Sondra Mitchell, Kristin Hill, Jessica Buss, Susan Hawke and Eva Olivarez won for the 18th-ranked Aztecs (10-6).
