Syd Thrift, fired as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates after last season, was named senior vice president of baseball operations for the New York Yankees.

“We are tremendously happy to be able to have Syd Thrift join the Yankees,” owner George Steinbrenner said. “He and (manager) Dallas Green both turned losing situations into artistic and business successes in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Chicago.”
