College Roundup : SCC Loses in First Round, 91-87

Indiana Bethel defeated Southern California College, 91-87, in the first round of the National Christian College Athletic Association championships at Chattanooga, Tenn.

Indiana Bethel went ahead, 89-87, on Rick McGillicuddy’s basket with 17 seconds remaining. Southern California College had a chance to tie but Phil Hill’s 15-foot jumper missed, and Terry Scrugg’s tip-in was off the mark.

The Vanguards (29-5) fouled with 3 seconds remaining. But Jody Martinez made both free throws to clinch the victory for Indiana Bethel (30-7).

In the NCAA wrestling championships:

The four Titan wrestlers participating in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Wrestling Championships in Oklahoma City were eliminated Thursday. Three of them lost in the preliminary and consolation rounds. Heavyweight David Jones lost his only match.

In the 118 pounds class, Erin Millsap lost to Clemson’s Donnie Heckel, 2-0, and Syracuse’s Jim Fussell, 6-1.

The Titans’ Cody Bryant lost to Mike Lingenfelter, 18-5, wrestling at 134 pounds. In the consolation round he lost to Chuck Barbee of Oklahoma State, 5-4.

In the 150-pound class, Fullerton’s Scott Schumm lost to TeDon Fleischmann of New Mexico, 10-3, and Dave Wlodarz of Cleveland State, 4-3.

Jones lost to Bob Potokar of Michigan, 3-2.

In nonconference baseball:

Keio University 6, UC Irvine 5--Freddie Combs and Brian Young doubled for the Anteaters at home.
