A 16-year-old Huntington Beach High School student died Sunday night when the motorcycle on which she was a passenger hit a car, police said. Leslie Groosman died instantly in the 10:39 p.m. accident on Pacific Coast Highway, north of Warner Avenue, police said.
Neither Groosman nor the driver of the motorcycle, Scott Melnyzok, 18, was wearing a helmet, police said.
Melnyzok was treated for a concussion and cuts at Fountain Valley Community Hospital, then taken to Orange County Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of manslaughter and felony drunk driving. The driver of the car, Randy Seymour, 32, of Garden Grove, was uninjured.
Seymour said he did not see other vehicles around him before the accident occurred. “It’s like they came out of nowhere,” he said. “When I pulled over, I still didn’t know what hit me.”
Huntington Beach High Principal Gary Ernst announced Groosman’s death to students at 11:30 a.m. today.
