SPOTLIGHT: HERITAGE PARK

Location: 14701 Harvard Ave., Irvine.
Description: The 44-acre park includes large turfed areas for picnicking and recreation, along with playgrounds and walking paths. A lagoon is under rehabilitation and is due to be refilled this week, and a gazebo for weddings and weekend concerts will be built near the lagoon by summer. Heritage Park is also home to a number of community facilities and services:
RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

Lighted basketball courts, lighted multi-use fields (softball, baseball, soccer), lighted tennis and racquetball courts and practice softball diamonds (unlighted) are available.
IRVINE FINE ARTS CENTER

Activities: Day and evening classes, workshops, art exhibits, open studio activities and special events. Studios include drawing and painting, ceramics, sculpture, lapidary/jewelry and photography.
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The park is open the third Sunday each month, 1 to 5 p.m.
HERITAGE PARK AQUATICS COMPLEX

Activities: A year-round aquatics program includes daily lap swimming, along with safety classes and scuba lessons. There are also competitive aquatic clubs in diving, swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo. Call for hours.
IRVINE YOUTH SERVICES CENTER

Activities: Offers recreational and leisure activities designed specifically for teens. A sound-proof band rehearsal room is available at the center from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Hours: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. (closed Sundays).
HERITAGE PARK REGIONAL LIBRARY

Facilities: Part of the Orange County Public Library system, the library has about
120,000 volumes, in addition to a meeting room, a public access computer room and a children’s department offering a variety of programs.
Hours: Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
CHILD CARE CENTER

Facilities: More than 50 preschoolers are cared for at the city-owned center, which is operated by Irvine Valley College. The center was completed last fall.
