Todd Worrell of the St. Louis Cardinals quadrupled his salary as the group in arbitration was reduced to 55 players.

Worrell, 29, a right-handed reliever, agreed to a 1-year contract for $875,000, a raise of 307% from the $215,000 he made last season.

Left-hander Jimmy Key of Toronto signed a 3-year contract at well over $1 million a year, with an option for a fourth season.

Other players who signed to avoid arbitration included outfielder Rob Deer, left-handed relief pitcher Dan Plesac of Milwaukee, reliever Brad Havens of Cleveland, first baseman Gerald Perry and pitcher Charlie Puleo of Atlanta and New York Mets pitcher Rick Aguilera.
