Girls’ Basketball : Sylmar Trampled After Walkout

Sylmar High was flattened by Grant, 59-30, Friday in an East Valley League game at Sylmar after being forced to promote 2 players from the junior varsity in order to field a team.
Several Sylmar players did not return from a student walkout staged earlier in the day as a show of support for teachers, who are involved in a salary dispute with the L. A. Unified School District.
Grant outscored Sylmar, 15-5, in the first quarter. Shenia Smith scored 11 points and had 17 rebounds for Grant (6-5, 4-3 in league play).
Teammate Monique Young had 12 points and 16 rebounds.
In other City Section games:
Reseda 64, Monroe 42--Reseda trailed, 28-21, at halftime, but second-half scoring outbursts by Jennifer Marzahl, Aggie Garcia and Denisha Jordan carried the Regents to the Mid-Valley League win at Reseda.
Marzahl scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half, Garcia scored all 13 of her points in the second and Jordan added 8 of her 10 after halftime. Garcia had 13 rebounds and Marzahl had 11.
Birmingham 49, Poly 47--Tracie Harris scored 21 points and made 3 3-point shots, as the Braves held off Poly in a Valley Pac-8 League game at Poly. Crissy Cavallero added 7 points and 11 rebounds for Birmingham (4-7, 2-5).
Canoga Park 79, San Fernando 25--Colleen Pratt scored 24 and Soo Yoo added 15 to lead the Hunters in a West Valley League game at Canoga Park.
SOUTHERN SECTION
Thousand Oaks 46, Simi Valley 34--Shani Smyth scored 21 points and Amy Chandler added 11 to lead Thousand Oaks to the Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.
The Lancers led, 22-19, at halftime and outscored the Pioneers, 24-15, in the second half.
Thousand Oaks (18-3, 6-1) took undisputed possession of first place in the league while Simi Valley dropped to 3-5.
Westlake 47, Camarillo 42--The Scorpions fell into second place in the Marmonte League with the loss. Camarillo is 5-2 in league play.
Westlake, which continues to play the role of spoiler, handed Thousand Oaks its only league loss.
Channel Islands 56, Royal 34--Ytteb Bowls scored a game-high 23 points as the Raiders won a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands. Carolanne Laich paced the Highlanders with 12.
