BESSANS, France — Kathy Swenson of the United States won the fourth stage of the Alpirod today to widen her lead in the international sled dog race.
She covered the 35-kilometer (21.7-mile) course in the Moriana Valley in 1 hour and 28 minutes, clocking an average speed of 13 m.p.h.
Tony Andreone of France placed second more than a minute behind, and Tim White of the United States finished third.
Two runs were scheduled today, with mushers competing for the first time under the lights in an evening stage.
The runs make up for races canceled in Switzerland because of the lack of snow.
Swenson leads the overall standings, followed by White, Nicoud Pascal of Switzerland, defending champion Joe Runyan of the United States and Andreone.
