Fillie Surging Surges to Win in Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream

HALLANDALE, Fla. — Surging, the odds-on favorite, outran Royal Snub Wednesday to win the $45,880 Old Hat Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Gulfstream Park.
Ridden by Craig Perret, Surging moved up quickly on the inside. Royal Snub stayed with the favorite to the three-eighths pole but Surging extended her lead to five lengths at the end, finishing the six-furlong race in 1:10 2-5.
Surging paid $3.60, $2.80 and $2.20. Royal Snub paid $2.80 and $2.60. Coax Chelsie paid $2.80 to show.
Surging, a Florida-bred daughter of Fappiano, is owned by Joe Allen.
Bubba Blue Chip took the lead in the stretch and then held off a late charge by Closeout to score a half-length victory in the featured $6,500 pace at Freehold Raceway on Wednesday.
Driven by Joe Schwind, Bubba Blue Chip paced the mile in 1:59.5 in winning for the second time in three starts this year. The 6-year-old gelding paid $7.20, $4.60 and $2.40.
Closeout returned $4.20 and $2.20, while pacesetter Jef’s Pole Cat finished third and was worth $2.40.
