New state statistics indicate that cancer death rates are higher in Northern California than in Southern California. Statistics from death certificates from 1980 through 1984 show that after adjustments for age and population density, the more rural and northern counties such as Shasta, Lake, Mendocino and Yuba have higher cancer death rates than average. They also show that the state’s large northern urban counties, including San Francisco, Alameda and Sacramento, have higher rates than such southern urban counties as Los Angeles and Orange.
