Coach Tom Landry said that the Dallas Cowboys won’t decide until February whether to make UCLA’s Troy Aikman the No. 1 pick in the National Football League draft, despite the comment a day earlier from Gil Brandt, the Cowboys’ chief scout, that Aikman was “virtually assured” of being taken first.
After watching the Cotton Bowl on television, Landry said, “I thought Troy did a good job of taking what Arkansas gave him. They took away the deep pass so he threw the short passes well. He did a good job of directing the team. UCLA had a good running game and that helped. . . . We’ve got plenty of time to make the pick.”
The Quarterback Club of Washington, D.C., apparently agreed with Brandt’s opinion, announcing Aikman’s selection as its college quarterback of the year.
