A 31-year-old man was seriously wounded by police early Sunday after he tried to commit suicide, then reportedly threatened police, a police spokesman said.
About 9:30 a.m., Oceanside police received many calls that a man was screaming and throwing furniture in an apartment on Paseo de Laura, police spokesman Bob George said.
When police arrived, they found George Caplas stabbing himself in the legs and arms with broken shards of glass, George said.
Sgt. Richard De Rouen attempted to calm Caplas by shooting him with a sedative-laced dart, but Caplas became enraged and started throwing furniture at officers, George said.
Rouen then shot Caplas in the thigh and buttocks. Caplas was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he was listed in serious condition Monday night.
