Dieter Thoma, 19, of West Germany, upset Matti Nykanen of Finland at Thunder Bay, Canada, in the first World Cup ski jumping meet of the season.
Thoma came from fourth place after the first run to win the 89-meter hill competition with 221.6 points.
He turned in jumps of 88.5 and 90 meters to push two Finnish jumpers, Risto Laakonen and Nykanen, into second and third place.
