SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Division I : Mater Dei Surprises Long Beach Jordan, 16-9

Dan O’Neil ran for 1 touchdown and passed for another as Mater Dei defeated Long Beach Jordan, 16-9, Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs at Long Beach Jordan.
Lester Falatrea kicked a 28-yard field to give Long Beach Jordan (4-5-1) a 3-0 halftime lead.
O’Neil scored on a 3-yard run in the third quarter. Mike Ammann’s conversion gave the Monarchs (6-5) a 7-3 lead.
Long Beach Jordan took a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter on a 41-yard pass from Ted Ramirez to Louie Felix.
Mater Dei tied the score when Ramirez fumbled out of the end zone for a safety. O’Neil threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Tony Pena for the game-winning touchdown.
Mater Dei will play top-seeded Loyola in the quarterfinals next week.
