Northridge Wipes Out Medfly
A Mediterranean fruit fly infestation in Northridge has been eradicated and a quarantine on the area has been lifted, the federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service announced today in Washington.
The government had restricted shipment of fruit from a 62-square-mile area as part of the campaign to wipe out the Medfly, one of the world’s most destructive pests of fruits and vegetables. “Trapping surveys have indicated that infestations no longer exist. The last Medfly was found on July 31,” said Larry Slagle, associate administrator of the inspection service. A quarantine remains in effect on a 76-square-mile area near Culver City.
