At a World Boxing Council meeting in Mexico City, Dr. Donald Catlin proposed that marijuana no longer needs to be a prohibited drug within the sport because it slows a boxer’s reactions, rather than enhancing performance.
Catlin runs UCLA’s drug-testing laboratory, which is accredited by the International Olympic Committee. The proposal, which was being discussed in closed committee sessions, would also include a set of penalties for different levels of drugs found in a boxer’s system.
Also at the meeting, the WBC voted to censor former middleweight champion Jake LaMotta because he visited South Africa.
And, the group agreed to review tapes of last Saturday’s controversial lightweight title unification bout between Julio Cesar Chavez and Jose Luis Ramirez before deciding whether to order a rematch.
