Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” broadcast--which inspired a mild panic in 1938 in this country--exerted the same power 50 years later over some 40,000 people in Braga, Portugal. Sunday’s 90-minute broadcast of a Portugese-language re-creation of the program had been advertised for days, but scores of calls to the local radio station, police and fire stations were received anyway. The curious drove outside town, where Radio Braga reported aliens from Mars were landing. The frightened began fleeing in cars, and lines reportedly formed at some gas stations in town.
