A man believed to be a gang member was killed in a Long Beach drive-by shooting and four persons, including a 15-month-old baby, were wounded in another in South-Central Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Los Angeles police said the baby, who was not identified, was placed on life-support systems at Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center with a head wound, and that two other victims were in stable condition. The condition of the fourth person hurt in the shooting on East 109th Place was not stated.
Meanwhile, the Police Department this weekend renewed its controversial program of saturating gang-infested neighborhoods as 200 officers swept through the Harbor, Southeast, Southwest and 77th Street divisions, arresting 365 suspected gang members for investigation of various offenses, including more than 60 felonies. The sweeps, begun in February, have led to more than 20,000 arrests.
