Between 5,000 and 6,000 South Africans were among the 70,000 who attended the Amnesty International “Human Rights Now!” concert at the Zimbabwe National Sports Center in Harare, the nation’s capital, on Friday. The concert marked the 17th of 20 stops on the international tour featuring Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Peter Gabriel and Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour. The political content of the show differed little from the preceding concerts. Gabriel, though, drew roars from the racially mixed crowd when he introduced his song “Biko,” a tribute to black South African leader Steve Biko, who died in police custody in 1977.
