Although Texas A&M; accumulated more first downs, more rushing yards, and more passing yards than Oklahoma State Saturday night at Stillwater, Okla., the Aggies also committed 5 turnovers (2 fumbles, 3 interceptions) which led to 24 Oklahoma State points. The result: A 52-15 victory for Oklahoma State.
The turnover-free Cowboys scored on each of their first 6 possessions before their first punt, which came after they had posted a 38-7 lead with 90 seconds left in the first half.
Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders rushed for 157 yards and scored 3 touchdowns, 2 of them on first-half runs of 58 and 4 yards, and the third on a 61-yard punt return at the end of the third quarter.
TCU 31, Boston College 17--Tony Darthard rushed for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns to lead Texas Christian University at Ft. Worth.
TCU (2-1) gained 393 yards rushing including 4 touchdown. Scott Bednarski ran for 102 yards and a touchdown, and Scott Ankrom gained 99 yards in 13 carries and scored on a 44-yard touchdown run to cap the Horned Frogs’ scoring.
Boston College (1-3) scored its 2 touchdowns in the fourth quarter, with Mark Camphaus, who left the game with a broken jaw with 1:55 left, connecting with Marcus Cherry and Tom Waddle on 48- and 4-yard touchdown pass play, respectively.
Texas 27, No. Texas St. 24--Shannon Kelley threw 2 touchdown pases to Keith Cash, the second with 45 seconds to play, and the Longhorns came from behind for a victory at Austin over the top-ranked team in Division I-AA.
North Texas quarterback Scott Davis passed for 419 yards, the most ever allowed by Texas. Davis also threw for 3 touchdowns.
Both teams are now 2-1.
North Texas, a 18-point underdog, appeared to clinch the win by denying a Texas 2-point conversion try after Deon Cockrell’s 5-yard touchdown run closed the gap to 21-20 with 4:06 to play.
Texas Tech 36, Baylor 6--Billy Joe Tolliver passed for 4 touchdowns, and the Red Raiders (1-2) allowed the Bears (3-1) only 2 rushing yards en route to an upset victory at Lubbock, Tex.
Texas El Paso 27, Tulsa 24--Pat Hagerty passed for 276 yards and 2 touchdowns to give the Miners (3-1) a victory over the mistake-prone Golden Hurricans (1-2) at Tulsa.
SW Louisiana 41, Rice 16--Junior quarterback Brian Mitchell ran 7 times for 99 yards and scored 4 touchdowns to lead Southwestern Louisiana (3-0) to a thrashing of Rice (0-2) at Lafayette, La.
