A suspected illegal alien was shot in the leg during a tense confrontation with a U.S. Border Patrol agent on the San Diego side of the international border.
The victim, Gerrardo Murillo Garcia of Mexico City, was treated at the Chula Vista Community Hospital for a gunshot wound to the right leg. He was later released to the Border Patrol.
San Diego police gave this account of the shooting, which occurred about 9 p.m. Friday near Del Sol Boulevard as it crosses under the Interstate 805 overpass:
The agent, who was not identified, saw three suspected aliens who began running when they realized they had been seen. The agent caught up with one of them, there was a brief struggle, and the agent pulled his revolver when the other two returned to help their friend.
The agent radioed for help. Then, all three of the aliens began to charge him, one of them carrying a rock. The agent fired one shot, striking Murillo in the leg.
